I saw no merit in the Dominion War. DS9 did some good things for Star Trek
IMHO the Dominion War was not one of them. As my plots do not involve any
of the DS9 people I just don't have the war at all.
Currently ion the G-Trek timeline the Klingons have agitated a war against
the Cardassians. The Cardassians are secretly backed by the Romulans who
hope to bleed the Klingons. It is far better that Cardassians bleed to
bleed the Klingons that Romulans bleed at all.
Best possible outcome is that the Klingon conquer the Cardassians after
a long and difficult war. The Cardassians will be a ball of thorns for the
Klingon Empire, crippling their further expansion by simply existing. Also
the Federation will not approve, driving a wedge between the Feds and the
Klingons.
The Romulans front man in the operation is "officially" not
suppose to be doing this. The Romulans want plausible deniability with the
Federation should a connection come out. This loyal Romulan will be
expected to fall on his sword, and will.
Meanwhile the Romulans are establishing a permanent peace with the
Federation. Lo! The Federation keeps it word on treaties. They can
secure that entire border by signing a piece of paper. Further more they
can then partake of the economic and material richness of the region
through trade. This not only give them more material to pursue their aims
on other borders, but give them a new source of material, and frees up
Romulans and ships to do other tasks.
Both the Romulan Empire and the Klingons have reached a crises point.
Their native populations are too small, their empires too big.
For the Klingons this is expressed in the "Real Klingon vs. New
Klingon" debate. Real Klingons contend that you must be born a member
of the Klingon race to be a Klingon. Many old and powerful houses hold
this staunch view. New Klingons say that any member of any race that will
live as a Klingon, by Klingon ethics and morals, is a Klingon. This view
is held by Gowron, Kahless and many of the minor houses. This internal
debate is going on during the current war.
For the Romulans the problem is more acute. Their method of dealing more
underhanded, as would be Romulan. For the first time in history non
Romulans are being allowed in the Star Forces. Only in support or cannon
fodder roles, but allowed none the less. No talk of making them Romulans,
that debate does not exist. The Praetor has declared a baby bonus. Not in
that many words, but "due ot the richness of the empire, all Romulan
children are awarded a gift on their birth." The Romulan way to say
"bigger families please". Being Romulan there is also negative
pressure. The best positions are reserved for those that show the
"greatest loyalty", that now includes fertility.
