LOL, you've been at it about as long as I have (using linux, that is).
When it happens to me, it usually means I am missing a prerequisite package
for the package I am trying to compile, *OR* I don't have some part of the
linux kernal source installed (like it is installed but it is a mis-match
for my version).
That may be a repeat of things you've already heard, but those are the two
things that nearly 100% bite me regularly. ;)
