Hi, David! Haven't seen you post in a while, so hope you haven't had a
relapse of whatever was ailing you last autumn.
Out of sheer frustration with the currently available offerings, I'm
contemplating writing my own genealogy program. As if I don't already have
too much on my plate! :-( If someone else wants to take my idea and write
the thing, be my guest!
(Aside to Andy Roberts: please remind me to NEVER look at FTree again! I
*HATE* the thing!! No wonder Nils couldn't sell enough copies to make it
worthwile. The whole user interface needs to be scrapped and a new one
designed from scratch. And I thought Brother's Keeper's interface was
clumsy!)
I don't know how much you know about genealogy software, so please forgive
me if the following too elementary. This isn't specific to Object REXX (I
was thinking to use C++), but the basic principles could be used for
writing the program in Object REXX, as well.)
The various genealogy programs exchange genealogical information by
importing/exporting data in GEDCOM format. I propose to begin with the
GEDCOM standard, and use its data structure as the basis for my program.
The program would act on the data to enable the user to add, edit, delete,
link family members, etc., as well as print various reports and
import/export GEDCOMs from/to others.
Is this what is meant by Object Oriented Design and Programming?
