Yes...and some writers still use the term. I think "transitional" is
more accurate and is the term used in a recent workshop I attended.
Transitional suggests a temporary situation which is what invented
spelling really is -- temporary. The teacher doesn't leave the learning
up to osmosis either. Spelling, like other aspects of writing, is a
very important part of the editing process.

There is a book floating around somewhere that has the current life of
Dick and Jane. Dick died, Jane is living with some guy, the kids have
married and divorced. The dog bit the dust long ago but left some
puppies in the family line. Sort of a 90's version.
