In this case, I agree. In other cases... TNG in particular was influenced
by a lot of current work from other places. They ripped off...er, umm...
"borrowed" from a lot of folks up to and including Anne Rice. And usually in
a very clumsy way.

Again, true. I think Roddenberry (who apparently had not read much SF before
making ST) saw this movie and it became (intentionally or not) the major
influence for what became ST. It's 40-plus years old and still a pretty good
movie, too.
