subject: More about Trek Books

JPH> Well, yes. that's true. But in the specific case, Honor
JPH> Harrington post dates Trek and so Trek can not be influenced by those
JPH> stories. The Honor Harrington stories may be influenced by trek to
JPH> certain degree, but that's just speculation.
In this case, I agree. In other cases... TNG in particular was influenced
by a lot of current work from other places. They ripped off...er, umm...
"borrowed" from a lot of folks up to and including Anne Rice. And usually in
a very clumsy way.
JPH> As for Space Opera influencing Trek, go look at "Forbidden
JPH> Planet" I've heard it described as the real, true, secret first pilot
JPH> for Star Trek. Many of the elements are in place there.
Again, true. I think Roddenberry (who apparently had not read much SF before
making ST) saw this movie and it became (intentionally or not) the major
influence for what became ST. It's 40-plus years old and still a pretty good
movie, too.
