Hi Holger,
HG> Excuse me but I'm getting a headache trying to understand all these
HG> different versions of Thunderbird, Firefox, Mozilla, PmW-tb and PmW-fx.
I know, its darned confusing at times and I hoep i have the following
right.......;-)
Start with a couple of simple rules -
Rule 1: Mozilla up to 1.7 used core code that I will call Codebase 1.
Codebase 1 code is no longer being actively developed nor debugged.
Rule 2: Seamonkey, Firefox & Thunderbird are all new wrappers around
Codebase 2. Codebase 2 is the current active codebase.
Rule 3: IMHO the products released based on Codebase 2 are functionally
inferior (personal thoughts only) to Codebase 1 products, although many
people are reporting performance improvements.
For the OS/2 specific versions of these products -
Mozilla is the original integrated (Web/News/Mail/IRC) client. The
"current" Version is 1.7.12 and this is reported to be the LAST
version of this line of product. This is the current version that I am
using. I can see a Windows v1.7.13 is available but I won't hold my breath
on an OS/2 version.
Seamonkey is an integrated (web/News/Mail/IRC) client as a COMPLETE code
re-write of Mozilla using Codebase 2 and it started life at v1.0 again
(just to further confuse us). I am not sure where this has got to, it
should still be a "mainline" product but I am not 100% sure. I
tried the V1.0 release but didn't like it as so many configuration options
were missing...
FireFox is based oon the same Codebase 2 as a Seamonkey, but it is a
stand-alone Web browser only (IE no Mail, no News, etc). The current
version is 1.5.? and this is the mainline code that is now being actively
developed for all platforms.
Thunderbird is the stand-alone Newsreader like Firefox using the new
Codebase (so its the Newsreader mate to FireFox).
PMW-? These are Peter Weilbacher (sp??) version of Firefoxx & Tbird.
The new Codebase licensing rules say he has to rename it (hence the PMW-*)
so they are fairly direct equivalents to Firefox, etc at the same version
level. These are specifically crafted OS/2 versions that include a lot of
extra fixes and tweaks. Probably the best choice if you wish to try FF/TB.

Lastly, most "add-ins" for Mozilla wont work in Seamonkey, so if
you customise your setup a lot you may struggle to get the same
functionality...
I hope this helps.
Cheers...........pk.
