During a period of time when I was between decent paying jobs, we lived
in a HUD housing project.  In that project were several "baby
factories".  Women whose sole purpose was to have enough children to
keep them on the public dole.  
Our next door neighbor was a good example.  She had 3 kids, all by
different fathers.  While we lived there she got pregnant again and had
her fourth.  That guaranteed her enough income through welfare to allow
her to go out once or twice a week and generally live better then those
of us who were working and trying to get out of the place.
Thats what causes a loss of compassion towards unwed mothers, not the
fact that they decided to keep the child either through pursuation of
other means.  
I know several women who have children, single moms, who have managed to
survive off the public dole, I know one rather well...
