He was invited to speak, and had just finished writing a new book.
So it made sense, at least to him, to tell the students all about it.
Now do realize he is crazy.  His nickname is "Corporal Cueball" - and
not just because he sports a bald head.  The man literally bleeds
purple and gold.  And then he skipped town and teaches at Tulane.
But don't let the students at LSU find out about that.

Before the War, he was president of LSU.  The number of students
was significantly less than what it is today, and it was also a
military academy at the time.  Was he a good administrator?  Maybe.
No way of knowing, or telling, the times being much different today
than they were then.

There used to be a portrait of Sherman hanging up at LSU for decades,
until a student noticed who it was, and a story was written in the
campus newspaper.  This started a mini civil war inside the campus,
as some students wanted the portrait removed and others wanted it to
remain.  The administration decided to remove the portrait, given the
negative publicity it was generating.
