Have you tried ordering a manual from Netcomm?  Hopefully it won't come to
that, but older Telebit modems (I assume it's 'older'?) might have a few
different settings to more modern or common brands.

From terminal mode, try AT&V  - if that gives you a screen
of setup info we might be in business; if so, clip and post that screenful;
someone might spot something wrong.  If not, then you're looking for
someone who's heard of these things, to tell you what AT&V did to your
modem :)
