Type "1st". Highlight the "st". Select format\font and pick
"superscript".
You can load the appropriately formatted text into autocorrect strings, so 
that when you type 1st, Word automatically reformats it with the 
superscripted letters.
This capability is already included as part of Intellisense in Word 7.0.
