The Ambassador line.
The Ambassador class was the Glamor ship of the last generation. They are
still respectable, flexible vessels of the rear of the front. But they are
not the latest in technology.
Tim Kirk changed that. His pricey refit of the USS Kongo got the boys at
fleet thinking, always dangerous. While Starfleet is committed to the
experiment of the RI equipped Ambassador refits, they are not 100%
committed. Qualified RIs with Starfleet experience are rare.
However, if the Ambassador can take and thrive with that radical a refit,
she should stand one not as radical. A refit with a modern, but standard,
starfleet power system.
End result a new power system is designed to fit the Ambassador ship with
the speed and power plant of new ships. An entire line of good ships is
made best ships. As Ambassadors come up for major refits they get the new
drive treatment. A fraction the cost and time to build new.
