Many of my users have been complaining that they are
receiving errors when attempting to run the latest version of
VirusScan. Unfortunatly there is a reason and it was
explained to us by David Muir, the author of THD ProScan
as follows:

Subject: SCAN 3.xx
Okay, before you 'start' asking about SCAN v3.0.0 and THD ProScan, here
are a couple of facts.
Yes it works with THD v12.5 (and likely most other 12.x versions as well)
Yes it requires an ASTOUNDING 588 K of "FREE" conventional memory to operate.
What this means is that some people may not be able to use it simply
because it uses too much memory. There is NOTHING I can do about a lack of
memory.
    What to try..
Remove TSR's
Load mouse drivers etc HIGH
Load DOS high
MAKE SURE that your BBS is swapping
MAKE SURE that when you run THD that you have 590k free conventional memory
This of course applies only when using SCAN.EXE. Most virus scanner don't
require even near this much memory to operate. However complaints to me that
you're running out of memory when running SCAN v3.0.0 are a waste of time,
and
unless you're a registered user of SCAN.EXE, I suspect similar questions
directed toward McAfee will be useless as well. I 'personally' recommend
using
another scanner (one with more realistic memory requirements).

end.
I am afraid I cannot tweek 588k free memory on my system so after many
years of faitful use I have to stop using it. Hopefully McAfee's
programmers will rewtite theit engine to demand a more reaomable
call for conventional memory. Unitl then my test battery will
be AVP, F=Prot, Thunderbyte and AVScan.
