Hello to all!
I have been d/l'ing and reading for a few weeks now, and want you to
know that I really enjoy the commentary and info that is exchanged by
all of you dedicated sailors.
I have a long time desire to own and sail a boat, but to date have never
owned one. In fact my only sailing experience was on 16' Hobie for
a few hours on Tampa Bay that a friend of mine owned, and after some
verbal instruction at shore line, he sends me and wife out with a
"you'll figure it out!", and away we go.
We did real well, and in a short time we're streakin' down wind, tackin'
upwind, havin' a totally great time..and I'm from the experience,
totally "hooked".
My favorite offshore type boat has always been the Pivar design
Trimaran. I have always been impressed with their design and know they
are exceptionally fast compared to most mono's, and the shallow draft,
to me, is a plus.
So, the other day I ran across an ad in a local classified re: a 30'
Tri, of mid 70's vintage and to my own amazement, realize that the boat
is easily within my reach financially. The owner says the boat is in
real good condition, and "ready to go" for at least day/weekend cruises.
And when I informed him of my lack of any real experience, stated he
would be happy to instruct me in learning to handle the boat until such
time as I feel secure enough to go it alone.
I seem to remember reading that one of you has owned and even lived
aboard a Tri, and my first question is: Is it realistic to go for this
(or something similar), or back off.
I compare to, for instance, just because you can fly a Cessna 150,
doesn't mean you could handle a Learjet, or just because you drive your
little Toyota lane-switcher real well, doesn't mean you could get an 18
Wheeler out of the truckstop lot, let alone across country..
So whattaya think..should I just forget this altogether, or is it
feasable to think that I could do this?
Best wishes to all! Phil, Odessa FL, 8-31, 09:00, (and standing by).
