Hello Neil -

CA>> I never really liked C++ and know very little about it
CA>> other than it's an add-on to C as macros are to ASM.

NH> California State University now offers C as an optional
NH> elective course. However, the University will not offer any
NH> credit for the course if the student has previously taken a
NH> course in ANY other programming language. The only
NH> languages necessary to graduate in Computer Science are
NH> C++, ALC and Java. However, Data Structures and Compiler
NH> Design are both required and both are taught in C. Hmmm...
NH> it seems to me that there's something missing here.

I would take that to mean the person(s) teaching C are
tempermental and warning people not to introduce how it's done
in other languages during the length of the course. :-)

NH>> Do you have any idea of what is occurring with the link
NH>> between Europe and North America?

CA>> No, I'v not heard anything

--8<--cut

NH> It seems to me that the natural correlation between culture
NH> and language may have more to do with this. It seems to me
NH> that when any language is translated for another culture,
NH> the original meaning is (almost) always lost and any
NH> (attempted) translation usually changes the original
NH> meaning.

I used to think that but the Russians are as familiar (or more
so) with our Hollywood movies as most Americans are, they love
our country-western music and now the new stuff too. They buy
the same brands of clothing and know a good deal about our old
'muscle cars'. I think they understand a good portion of our
culture. The opposite is not true however. I think Americans
still believe cold war propaganda and have no idea what a
modern Russian's culture is like. That includes me btw. :-)

CA>> I don't remember exactly which country people are in since
CA>> many do not identify country of origin and I don't
CA>> memorize the fido node numbers.

NH> Gosh, one of my favorite leisure activities is memorizing
NH> the telephone book.

I sort of did that for awhile programming automated telephone
systems but only for Michigan. :-)
