The good news is that I was able to remove the old socket and install a 
low-profile ZIF socket without damaging the IIe.  The bad news is that the 
ZipChip now acts stone dead when clamped into the socket :-(.

I'm going to wait until the weekend to start excavating into it.  Nothing to 
lose at this point!
