Hi Rich:

You can try another cable but it doesn't sound like a cable or driver
problem. Sounds more like your LaserJet 5L is acting up. I would do
this:

Go through the LJ5L setup menus (break out your manual) and be sure you
have all the default settings programmed in. Then check the printer
trays, rollers, and so forth. If all of that doesn't resolve the
problem, more than likely it's an internal defect within the printer.
Odd as it may sound, it may even be the memory in the printer that's
causing it.

HP LaserJet printers are very durable and have a long life but when they
start to do strange things for no apparent reason, it's usually because
some electronic component within the printer itself is defective. I
have had this happen to me several times. The first time I had the
printer repaired for the cost of around $100 (needed a new circuit
card), the second time I decided enough was enough and replaced the
printer.

Good luck and regards.
