Oceanographer and climatologist Wallace Broecker is identified with
understanding of the global thermohaline circulation, especially the
Atlantic "conveyor" we see as the Gulf Stream. He was also one of
the first to realize how very non-linear the system can be -- e.g. that by
turning off the conveyor, over-all warming could sharply cool Western
Europe. That insight was diluted into the nonsense in _The Day After
Tomorrow_, and still generates a lot of cackling by idiots: "see,
those elitist scientific eggheads aren't even sure if it's gonna get warmer
or colder!"

He himself is very scrupulous about not exaggerating the certainty of
predictions. As he likes to say, "the experiment of moving gigatons of
carbon from long-term storage into the atmosphere is like poking a tiger
with a stick. I don't know, maybe it's a nice tiger. What do you
think?"
