You are making tremendous assumptions, David.  Remember, the scheme
required the user to download an executable, and to run that
executable.  This didn't happen automatically.  So, suppose the
"instructions" said:  "Run DAVID.EXE." (That was the name of the
executable - I'm not making this up).  "It will connect with our site
and you will be able to....."
Now:  wouldn't you _expect_ your modem lights to flash?  Wouldn't
yopu _expect_ it to dial?  To connect?  Of course.
As for "*ONLY* applies to those with modems" - well, the original
post talked about a "virus" which caused "your modem"... so I would
agree it applies only to those with modems.  Just like the standard
computer virus applies only to those with computers.
