What do you mean by "slow" and "fast?"
You should be able to set Telix for a locked port and hardware only
flow control with a high-speed modem and connect with anything down
to 300 baud.  Have you configured it with CTS/RTS on and the other
two (DSR/DTR and Xon/Xoff) off?  Is the modem configured to CTS/RTS
hardware flow control?
