Even if the Dufus steps down, the wisdom of that strategy
is still dependent upon two undecided events:
1) will OwlGore pardon the Dufus and risk the same damage
to his own reelection chances that Gerald Ford faced? 
2) will OwlGore select Gephardt as vice-president, thus
eliminating his primary opponent by annointing him as
successor and would Gephardt be willing to defer his
presidential run for another decade?

I think the majority of the electorate was unconvinced at
that time that he was a liar... and he did make an implicit
promise in the 1992 SuperBowl 60 Minutes interview that the
"womanizer" problems were behind him. 
Anyone who does not *NOW* see those character flaws for
what they are are indeed blind and gullible.
