subject: XP Safe Mode w/Network

Mark,

I'm above the Kindergarten level but not at the GEEK or NERD level, and
Probably won't ever be with these computers, but AFAIK You are nearer
to those Higher levels and I'd like You to help me with this.

I am still scratching my head over why Firefox v.28.0 will not complete
updating in the XP Limited Users Account I mainly use.

FF update to v.28.0 is accepted by a Admin Users Acct and also in a
Power Users Acct.
Those Accounts are listed in the Normal List of Accounts that I can
select when I start up XP the normal way.

If I start up in XP SAFE MODE I can select from either the Admin Users
Acct that is in the Normal List when I start up XP, and another Admin
Users Account that I'll call ADMIN1.

In looking at a Directory listing at C:\Documents and Settings that I
made using DIR /TC /OD to show when the Accounts were Created and
showing the list in Date/Time order, I see:

Administrator - ADMIN1- Only seen in SAFE MODE

All Users

Default Users

NetworkService

LocalService

Limited Users Account - which I normally use, this was Originally an
Admin Account HP had set up that I changed to Limited.

Power Users Account - I made but wasn't satisified with it

Admin Users Acct - that is shown at a Normal Boot and also in SAFE MODE

Guest

The first time I saw the ADMIN1 account was one day when a Tech Support
fellow asked me to restart and go into SAFE MODE, and he had me make
another Admin Users Account for testing purposes, which I think is the
one I called Admin Users Account above.

I'm thinking the ADMIN1 Account IS the MASTER Account that HP put on
this computer and named it Administrator in the directory list, and the
other Admin Users Acct I see in both Start Up Listings is the one I
made when he asked me to create a second account to use for Testing in
SAFE MODE while he was talking to me on the telephone.

I left it on the computer after the Tech session ended and I have used
it as THE Administrative Users Account whenever I install a program
that won't install in the Limited Users Account.

The MY account I used for awhile but it's unused now.
I kept it on the drive to look around what is in it someday.

The Guest account is Disabled.

I decided to look at Firefox in the two SAFE MODE Accounts to see if
one of them was causing FF when I start it up in the Limited Users
Account to show a message that it couldn't finish the Update to v.28.0
because I may be having another session of Firefox running.

For several days I have been trying to figure out why, when I start up
SAFE MODE with Networking, NEITHER of the two accounts will allow me to
connect while in the GUI, but I can PING yahoo.com just fine from the
CMD Prompt. ?????????

The Head Scratching here hasn't made me bald yet, could You tell me
what I need to do so that the two SAFE MODE Accounts will allow me to
be able to see Firefox open and also my Anti-Malward/Anti-Virus
software be able to get Updates in a SAFE MODE GUI?

Some of the things I noticed in those two Accounts is the Network Name
I use IS NOT the Default Name MS sets up for XP and other of their
O/S's but when I checked the Network Name of those two Accounts it was
the Default Name.

I'm puzzled why even the Admin Users Account in SAFE MODE has MS's
Default Name but the Same Account on a Normal start up has the Name
that I changed it to.

I changed the Network Name using the Network Wizard to MY Network Name
for both Accounts but it still won't allow any Network activity from
any program I've tried while in the SAFE MODE GUI.

And PING works from those two Accounts while I'm in a CMD session IN
SAFE MODE. ?????????

Thanks, and I welcome comments from the others reading this in the
Windows 95 FIDO Echo too!
