subject: U`u On A 16YO PC

Hi! Ed,

On Mon, 05 May 14, you wrote to me:

EV> Could U'u 12.04 be installed on a PC with 48Megabytes (Not GB) RAM?
EV> The HDD in the PC is smaller than 2GB?

Nope. It needs roughly 1Gb these days, though... just checking a vBox
setting... yeah, the Xubuntu 12.04 LTS vBox is set for 960Mb. It's so big
that I can't run it & Barb's XP vBox at the same time any longer. You
have plenty of HDD space there for something useful at least, Ed.

 EV> OR

Hang on. Is this a test? Nope. It ain't in Holger's list. Phew! :)

EV> Could DSLinux or Mint or Puppy be put on that box? Thanks!

It won't with Puppy. It needs a minimum of 256Mb these days, and likes to
have 512Mb. Even the old ones from the version 2.xx days liked to have
128Mb.

I'm not sure of DSL but remember that it's really only a "rescue"
thing for desktops. 'Distrowatch' (distrowatch.com) says it can use
"as little as 128Mb".

I don't know anything about Mint but Distrowatch advises that it's based on
Ubuntu. So, I think you're up the proverbial creek with that one too.

It might be possible to build a Debian-based, text only, kernel but that
would take an expert. That isn't in my ballpark. If you could 'up' the
RAM to 128Mb then you could try an old Puppy. They're still available for
download from their site
(http://puppylinux.org/main/How%20to%20download%20Puppy.htm#old). Either
that or DSL.

Good luck with it.

Cheers,
Paul.
