BJ>I'd like to know how long a long-wire antenna must be in order to be
BJ>appropriate for FAX and RTTY signals. I'd also like to find out if
BJ>there are any specialty antennas on the market that will enhance
BJ>FAX and RTTY signals. At present I've got a GROVE di-pole long
BJ>wire (not up yet). What does the AEA antenna do that a long wire
BJ>doesn't? How about the SONY AN-1? Happy Monitoring...Brian.
Brian, RTTY and FAX signals are just like any other radio signals.
Instead of transmitting voice or music, they transmit audio tones.
The only difference you will notice is that RTTY and FAX signals
are more susceptible to noise and interference, which will lead
to bad copy. The reason this occurs is because these signals
only carry a few select audio tones which makes it more noticeable
to the ear when receiving them. In contrast, music and voice
appear to the human ear to be better, but only because they
carry a wider spectrum and the brain can fill in the missing
gaps when the signal fades. The brain can also act as the most
sophisticated filter ever built, removing, or tolerating,
interference carried on voice and music frequencies.
Put up the Grove and enjoy!
