some time back, i had something similar happen with one of the accounts...
i had always had to use the administrator accout to install and update
FF... i was never able to do it with any limited user accounts... when the
administrator installs the software, it is available for all users...

later on, i was able to update with my limited user accounts if i knew the
administrator password... this works to this day which tells me there was
some problem that was fixed...

in my case, some time back, i had a limited user account that wouldn't
update becaue it thought there was already an update in progress... i dug
and rooted and removed a few files to no avail... finally, i just used my
admin account to uninstall the software... then i went looking to ensure
that things were clean and the account directories still existed with their
bookmarks, cache, cookies and all the rest... i noted the weird directory
names used so that i could fix them after i installed the software again...
so the next step was to install which i did... then i simply edited the
file that tells FF which directory to use for the account and i was back in
business...

NOTE: all of this was done on vista or w2k... i've never run XP but XP is
similar to vista other than some directory locations...
