Exactly what happened to Leonardo da Vinci finding seashells in rocks in
the Apennines. It took another 250 years for geology to accept that

(1) these were real fossils and not "lusus naturae," God's little
jokes, crystals that somehow took on organic forms

(2) they were the result of gradual changes in land/sea levels and not a
single Great Flood

... but once you've had that idea, you can't un-have it.
