> I like the low-tech/high-tech culture worlds concept. I think
Heinlein (in one of the Lazarus Long books) is the only person to point out
that a tractor, SUV, etc needs an oil refinery and a lot of spare parts to
keep it running, while a cow or ox just needs grass, and will build it's
own replacement unit.
> Odds are good that serious colonization (assuming terra-like worlds)
will be done by folks with low-tech, home-grown technology. It takes a
while to build the tools to build the tools to build a silicon fab plant,
etc.
That's one view, and might even be possible on some planets where the colon= ists
actually seek the low-tech solution. However, in Steve-Trek, that's not us= ually
how it is done on "official" colonies, those colonies that will
in time be = home to
millions of people (in Steve-Trek, the current colony that is being done in=
this matter
is Ramsadon, which the ship will visit in the upcoming "Euclid's
Day."). P= eople
are not just dumped on these colonies. Infrastructure is built first.
Con= struction
teams with ship-mounted replicators and other heavy industrial gear move in
once the survey teams have completed their work. The site for the capital
= city is
chosen, and construction begins. A power plant is built. A transmission s= tation
is installed and a subspace relay satellite put into orbit. Housing and ot= her
infrastructure follows, and the people start to move in. They're more like= ly to
come when they're displaced from other locations (a situation that involves
Ramsadon because settlers from planets lost in the Dominion War ended up
th= ere,
and many stayed when the war ended). In addition, a lot of the technology = is
pretty well proven. Replicators and the like is established technology wit= h the
bugs out. If you have a power source, and that's the first thing to go in,=
then
all you need is a few trained individuals to maintain the technology. Othe= r,
more established worlds are just a couple of days away by ship. Colonizati= on
might suggest planets out in the middle of nowhere, well away from other pl= anets,
but for the major colonies, that just is not the case.
