I've used HDPE for years to make worm gears. It cuts just fine using
ordinary woodworking tools, also machines well. The UHMW was also tried but
is a bit too soft for gears & is difficult to de-burr.
The 'cutting board' HDPE is actually cheaper than the regular stuff, and
has a nice textured surface that works better as a clutch surface an is
more resistant to surface scratching.
