Hello friends!
During a birthday visit I had the following experience with our
amazon: Mother-in-law was still busy making a "Black Forest cherry
cake". Meanwhile, in the living room, the amazon was let out of
its cage. It flew off straightaway into the kitchen. Since it was
not familiar with any landing places there, it circled around
several times and finally landed - greatly frightening the
housewife (my MIL!) - in a bowl. With wings spread, the animal
sank up to its belly into a gelatinous mass of cherries which had
been prepared to fill the cake. Though the amazon was freed within
seconds from its unfortunate position, some of the gooey cake
filling continued to stick to it.
Even the tamest amazon is reluctant to allow itself to be bathed
as thoroughly as was necessary after this landing. Dry again,
the feathers on the abdomen were still as stiff as freshly
starched laundry, and it took two more days before they were again
as soft as feathers usually are.
(Nobody of the birthday party was to know that happening when
eating THIS cake.
I am interested in hearing of further experiences with parrots
from you all. Please send it as Netmail as well as Echomail, the
way to Germany is more difficult than within the USA - and I do
not want to miss any of your letters!
Bye ... 5. September 1995: Klaus
