JP> In ILLUSTRATED CAT WATCHING, Desmond Morris posits
JP> this reason for that demonstratable cat behavior:
JP> "When a cat enters the room and looks around, it
JP> notices that several people are staring at it. They
JP> are the cat-lovers, gazing at the cat because they
JP> like it. But, in feline terms, to be stared at is
JP> to be mildly threatened. ... Instead of a glance,
JP> which is always acceptable, [animal lovers] keep
JP> staring at the animal in a way that makes it feel
JP> uncomfortable. The only person there not doing this
JP> is the cat-hater, who looks away and keeps very still,
JP> trying to be ignored by the the feared animal. But
JP> such behavior has precicely the opposite effect. For
JP> the cat, in search of a friendly lap on which to sit,
JP> makes a bee-line for this ideal companion, who is not
JP> moving around, not waving hands, not making shrill
JP> remarks, and above all, not staring."
JP> Sounds as good as any explanation to me. :,
It makes sense to me, and bears repeating...which is why I
quoted it in its entirety.
Don't know if it's correct, though. I asked my cat, but
she won't tell me. She just sat there and stared at me for
the longest time....
... I have to go home now. My brain is beginning to fizz.
