G'day Dave

PC> Any idea why USR are doing this or do you think it was just a
PC> bad batch of Flash Roms.

DH> My take is that the upper area of the Flash Roms is untested.
DH> Alternately, it may have been a deliberate buy of a batch of
DH> known "part good" Flash Roms, with the
"knowlege" that "we never
 DH> use that area".

Possible but i think it's more likely to be just a bad batch of
flash ROMS though you'd think they'd test selected batches of ROMS by
blowing them out to full capacity.

DH> So far, USR aren't saying, other than the possibly in error
DH> admission that the effect was intentional.

With paranoia levels rising over in the USR echo it's hard to believe
everything you read.

DH> (Do you get the impression that accurate information is kinda
 DH> lacking..? Uh.. yeah...:-)

It is a bit, USR should make a public statment to quell all the rumors
getting about at the moment. BTW From what i've read if your Courier
has an Intel Flash ROM your right, the problem ROM's are of a
different make.

DH> Also, the "current" 61 SDL on ftp.usr.com is in fact a reverse
DH> upgrade scam, taking a Courier back to pre - v34+ operation. The

PC> Intentional or just sloppy SDL control?.

DH> IMHO, a pipelined effect of the US government embargo against
 DH> v34+ technology.

Why the yanks would have an embargo on what is after all an
international std seem's rather strange to me, but then again it is
the yanks were talking about :-)

DH> The legit Australian 61_ set, one of the early v34+ ones, was up
DH> on the USR BBS for a while. It could also be a mistake in BBS
DH> maintenance - but I doubt it. Why would the downgrade code be
 DH> redated to current?

sure seems strange?

DH> Suggested action at the moment - use only SDL code from a known
DH> and trusted friend - USR is not such at the moment. Do NOT
DH> "upgrade" if you don't need to.

PC> I'll stick to the enhanced 11/95 code myself.

DH> I reckon. I'm not touching a new SDL with a bargepole myself,
DH> for some time to come, until and unless this mess is sorted out.

Well unless your got the domestic version as it seems work on all the
other SDL's have ground to a halt, Though with all the problems caused
by the later SDL's maybe we're the lucky ones.
