   What do they have over just tracking a number that keeps being incremented? 
That it's a function, which can be implemented in more than one place,
rather than something like incrementing a number kept in a file... 

   I'm just curious about which aspect of the issue you're attempting to
solve...    I also have looked at the issue of message IDs, although not
recently;  kept on coming back to the incrementing serial number kept in a
file, for simplicities sake...

   Haven't had a chance to test it out (have to move again), but will when I
can.
