TV> I have seriously been considering starting a small herb garden, but I
TV> don't really know just where to start. I think my best bet would be
Before I got my house, I used to grow herbs in a big plastic window
box that I got from the hardware store. It was inexpensive and small
enough to move around easily. Just fill with potting soil and you are
ready to plant. You can just plant them together, they don't seem to
mind .
I still keep some plants in containers anyway, especially mint. And I
plan to take part of my herbs and put them back in that box for the
winter.
Herbs are best propagated in different ways, depends on the plant.
Basil can be grown from seed... but most of mine I got this year at
the nurseries (we have quite a selection around here these days).
They were inexpensive (from 99 cents to $2) and I was able to set them
right out in my yard. Some herbs are annuals, some perennials...
The good thing about herbs is that they tend to be hardy plants and
can take more neglect than a lot of other plants.
I have sage, basil, thyme, tarragon, chives and mint. Oh, another
thing to keep in mind is the different varieties of each herb. I keep
the plant identifier with the herb. I have two kinds of sage, which
look very different. And two kinds of mint, peppermint and spearmint,
and I have a friend who is going to give me some chocolate mint to add
to my little collection.
Another fun plant that is not a cooking type herb, but is grown for
scent are the scented geraniums. I have lemon and peppermint and they
smell wonderful in the sun.
Sorry for rambling on so :-) but I have had a lot of fun with herbs,
I hope you do too!
... Could Basil make thyme with Rosemary?
