| subject: | Re: ATM How to mount a worm? |
From: "Mel Bartels" To: Reply-To: "Mel Bartels" >>> I'd like to seek some advice regarding how to mount a worm. I have one from what I believe is a Byers Cam-Trak worm gear set. <<< You can be sloppy or precise depending on how accurate you wish to track and how minimal the backlash you seek. Mount the worm using small precision bearings. You can add a pressure screw that keeps the worm help up against the gear. My rule is to never allow the worm to press tightly against the gear, otherwise excessive wear that can be fatal to gear and worm. Mounting bracket for the worm works best if made from metal - aluminum is fine for this small of worm. You can mount this bracket on wood or metal to make the final attachment to the mount. You do not need machining tools for any of this, but a drill press or drill guide will be helpful.
