they never removed that stuff  the BAT/COM/EXE stuff and "8.3" is a legacy
of the CP/M style of the origihal ms-dos. the unix-like stuff
(subdirectories, join etc...) didn't become part of dos until version 2
(join which was somewhat like the unix mount command has since been
dropped)
