>So what is life like on these colonies?

That's hard to say. "Euclid's Day" gives a glimpse of life
there.  The pla= net has
some agriculture. Additional survey teams move out to the other continents=
 for
more in-depth study,and some of the early settlers are construction workers
building more of the colony. In addition, most colonies are built to
servi= ce a starbase,
or to exploit a resource or something like that. It's later that living
sp= ace is added to
allow the colony to expand and develop a diverse range of economic and soci= al
and cultural infrastructure.

>In Jay Trek, I imagine official colonies are built like this, but
unofficial, freelance colonists must deal with what they can afford.

That's basically what I said. There is a difference between
"official" col= onies where
the full weight of technology is available and a more primitive stage is
sk= ipped, while
small, unofficial colonies lack this support and do what they must. I can
= see story
ideas in both.

>My big problem with the advanced technology colony is imagining what
colonists do with themselves one they are there.

Pretty well the same things that they do on other planets, or they do what
= is related to
the colony existing in the first place.
