While that's what the license agreement says, whenever I've installed a copy of
Office XP on a second computer, I've had to phone into MS's activation phone
site, and explained the situation to an employee... who then generated a
50-digit activation code and read it over the phone to me.

It works, but it's not quite automatic!

(By the way-- it can be a desktop and a notebook, or a home and an office
system... provided both aren't up and running Office at the same time).
