Well let's take somethings for granted.
The first is that life is a reaction to a sun heat cycle such that for it to
begin you would need a heat cycle that keeps water liquid, and you would have
an atmopsheric history similar to that of earth (and probably a planet that is
relatively the same size, and same distance from its energy source.)
Now add to that that aliens are replicators - such that natural selection
applies
THEN
If they walk on ground they'll look like and
have the same design as walking animals
If they fly they'll look like and have the same basic design as flying animals
If they burrow into the ground they'll look like and have the same basic
desings as burrowing animals.
etc.
So the environment limits what they'll look like, and all life should have a
relatively reasonable similar environmental boundaries.
Now once they escape natural selection - then
anything goes!
