Depends on the technology... I know for a fact that many countries outside of
the USA do not have the same technology. The plants here in Louisville are
monitored by the Federal EPA, the State, and a local APCD (Air Pollution
Control Department) that monitors all emissions.
In the neighborhood I grew up it was not uncommon, years ago, to wake up in the
morning and go outside to find your car was covered by a fine grey dust from
the coal plant. In the great scheme of things more mercury is released from
the breakage of florescant lighting tubes (including cfl bulbs) than the power
plant.
What I worry with the most is fukushima. There's been more damage to the
environement than can be measured by that one... and the Japanese Government
won't let anyone else come and help that one. I am much more worried about
fukushima than anything else.
The radiation that was measured on our west coast, especially Oregon, was quite
significant.
