I have mixed views of unions... in manufacturing and jobs that require heavy
labor and operations in unsafe conditions, yes they are needed.
In the government jobs I have worked, the police need unions to protect their
hazardous duty conditions and preserve their benefits and pay.
However, there are some areas where the union actually hurts the employer. For
instance the union that the clerks at the city hall and police department does
little more than guarantee those who have been there the longest work the least
and ride the backs of the newer employees. The longevity employees will get
moved to the "cushy" jobs. Also in the clerks I have observed and was told
that if one clerk outperforms the group as a whole the rest of their
loving union brother and sisters will gang up on them to slow down so they
won't be exepcted to do the same heavier amount of work.
We were alwyas told an honest days work for an honest days pay... but when you
have unions that are in grocery stores, like my little cousin works, that do
little more than collect their $10 in dues every week he works what good is it
actually doing?
