| subject: | Re: Direction of Evolutio |
Hi,
if you are new to the subject you may want to consult `Evolution' by
Mark Ridley which provides a solid and excellent introduction to the
topic. If you would like to know more about the `direction' about
evolution consult the paper by Lewontin entitled `Adaptation' in which
the author illustrates evolution by using a niche space metaphor. Also
of interest would be the work by Van Valen (quoted by Lewontin) whose
data shows that the likability of extinction is likely across all
species independent of their duration of existence. In other words,
species do not get any `better' over time but merely preserve their
status quo as the environment changes. It is difficult to talk about
direction (other than effects such as stabilising or disruptive etc.) in
evolution as it is essentially purposeless. Natural selection does,
however, favour temporarily advantageous characters allowing the species
to change (evolve). So, we do become better at coping with the current
environment but are just as `good' as our ancestors considering their
environment at the time. Evolution is neither good nor bad, it just happens.
I hope this is helpful.
Cheers,
Philipp
