The $P2 is a "stage packet" that is renamed/managed automatically, so that
file should not be left-over.
The symptoms you are explaining definately sounds like the mail is not being
compressed, as in, PKZIP is not being executed.
What OS/environment is this installation running under?
What happens if you take out GAP BBS completely. Configure your system as a
"stand alone mailer" and see what happens?
