The person in the stores does not know the rules.  I would recommend anyone
who has the FREE MKC card from their employer's read the membership book you
get with the card... and take the book with you to WDW or to the Disney
Stores... the 10% discount IS AVAILABLE FOR THE STANDARD MKC CARD.  If they
do not give you the discount... show the booklet... or ask for a supervisor.
The only difference between the MKC card and the MKC "Gold Card"... is that
you get a "personalized gold card", a travel bag, and a luggage tag (that you
can get free from Disney Travel) and a slightly upgraded magazine that has 
ll
the same information as the free magazine that comes with your standard MKC
card (if you filled out the registration card and either you or your employer
returned it to Disney... you should be getting a free MKC magazine).  These
are the ONLY differences between the MKC standard and MKC Gold cards.... not
to mention the added cost of paying for the "Gold Card".
I just called the "employee benefits" office at Disney (since I am an
"independant contractor" that works for the Imagineering division of Disney),
and they confirmed that the ONLY ADDITIONAL BENEFITS THE GOLD CARD MEMBERSHIP
OFFERS IS THE BAG, TAG, PERSONALIZED CARD, & UPGRADED MAGAZINE.  Just compare
the advertisement for the "Gold Card" in your Disney Channel Magazine, or in
the MKC benefits book you get from your employer... and compare the benefits
the advertisement lists... with the benefits listed in the book.  If you can
live without your name on a plastic card, a travel bag, and a glitzier
magazine... and the cost... then the standard card is all you need.  If you
want to throw away about $60 of your hard earned money for such items... then
by all means... go for the "Gold Card".
If you are looking for discounts at the stores, for park admission, and for
travel specials and discounts... then the standard card is all you need.
