If it's the Avtek Flashmodem, use Motorola Lifestyle settings:

        &R0     for bi-directional hardware flow control
        %R2     retrain on medium Bit Error Rate
        *TH1    train at medium Bit Error Rate
        \V4     detailed connect messages
        \X1     pass through X-on/X-off characters

Also check the settings for fast V.42 LAPM detection and fast training if
you have compatibility problems with other modems.

AT$H displays fairly extensive on-line help.

Having the FOSSIL locked at 38400 bps should work ok for this modem too.
