You remember our discussion of how hard it is for a woman to be accepted in
sound work (cause it's mostly men.).
Well, looks like it is still here amongst us! Jeff worked with IATSE (as a
decorator) this week and one of the fellers asked him if he had any sound
experience, "cause we need some big boys like you to muscle around
equipment". He's 6'3" and 250+ lbs. The guy does several jobs around town
and out of town and wanted a couple of extras to work with him (pay scale was
okay too!)... but the bottom line was more so the size of the couple of
"extras" rather than their expertise. Albeit, he wanted to know if Jeff had
ever run sound and was familiar with setting up equipment; but the biggy was
"you're big enough to handle the equipment!" Since the racks have wheeled
road cases, the cabinets are 15" loaded, that mainly leaves the board(s)
themselves and it usually takes two folks to move them anyway (unless King
Kong is around! -chuckle).
Oh, well... Maybe I can get some "consulting" bene's out of it all... Like
getting in free! - and NOT have to work the show(s). But it don't help on
pay day, does it?
