Unfortunately, short-sightedness is a very common problem in medicine.
There are significant numbers of people that would still refuse the maggot
treatment even if amputation was the only other viable option because maggots
are "yucky", then insist on "miracle drugs" from the doctor and sue when the
limb is lost due to infection and necrosis or have the family sue when the
person dies from massive infection.
Whether a person opts for conventional western medicine, alternative
medicine or a combination, the most important thing is that the individual
takes responsibility for their own health care choices. Gaining knowledge is
the most important thing a person can do to help him/herself.
But then again, I'm preaching to the choir.
