I performed a post-mortem on the failed lamp. On cutting through the joint
between the two halves of the plastic case, the tube assembly fell off in
my hand. The wires from the circuit board to the tubes had corroded
through. The reason was obvious: the tubes were fastened in with
"corrosive brown glue". This is a type of glue that used to be
popular back in the 80s for fastening electronic components in place. It's
white when applied, but heat gradually turns it brown and breaks it down
into a corrosive (and somewhat conductive) substance that corrodes metals
like the liquid from a leaking battery does.
