subject: Compact Floursecents Contain Mercury

From: "Dave Ings"

Prompted by the discussion here this week, I noticed that (local) packaging
of compact floursecent bulbs clearly states that they contain mercury and
should be disposed of "appropriately". I also notice that my
local recycling program requires that disposal of used bulbs requires a
special trip must be made to the hazardous materials depot:

Of course most people won't do this, at least until the word gets out, so
the result of all the Al Gore publicity etc etc might be a net increase in
the amount of mercury going into landfills.

Given mercury hangs around in the environment essentially forever, all I
can say is what a questionable "solution" this compact
floursecents seem to be.
