Ben, I see from another message that you have a Simplemodem 288F V.FC. What does your user that's having trouble use, do you know? I just polled you twice, the first time with my default 'unknown node' dial string, which requests MNP4 error correction and no compression, and got: : 08 Jun 23:45:28 BINK Dialing 067-23-3028 # 08 Jun 23:45:53 BINK Connect 12000/Rel [..] # 08 Jun 23:46:17 BINK 000:20 << seconds, as reported by modem # 08 Jun 23:46:17 BINK 007 << signal quality (out of 7). : 08 Jun 23:46:18 BINK Poll completed I then tried for LAPM + V.42bis, and got: : 08 Jun 23:51:12 BINK Dialing 067-23-3028 # 08 Jun 23:51:41 BINK Connect 9600/Lap-M/Compression [..] # 08 Jun 23:52:06 BINK 000:20 # 08 Jun 23:52:06 BINK 007 Interesting only getting a 12000 then a 9600 connect, especially with a 7/7 line quality report, but they were good quick connects nonetheless, with no sign of retraining, unlike the two local people trying to connect here with what look like maybe being the same model. Would you mind sharing your modem settings / registers, and results of ATI commands re DSP / firmware revision numbers, to compare with the locals?
