Stock Fenders?  Easy.  Numbering from bottom to top, 1 is bridge only.  2 is 
bridge and middle.  3 is middle only.  4 is neck and middle.  5 is neck only. 
The two tone pots are wired directly to the neck and middle pickups, and have 
no effect on the bridge pickup (unless it's in #2 in combination with the 
middle).
The three position switches were wired the same way, but guys had to learn to 
"balance" the switch to get the slot positions.  It wasn't until around '76 
that Fender started using the 5-way switch.
