subject: No Dialtone ??

Hello All (Especially to someone who can help me out here)

Ever since the 10/4/96 my Modem has refused to detect a Dialtone,it
returns a NO DIALTONE error, when I try to ring out.
Although I can hear the DIALTONE in the Modems speaker.
Every thing else seems to work fine ie.. RING BUSY CONNECT

Let me explain the happenings. For a couple of weeks pryer to the 10th I
was trying to setup my GETTY to answer a FAX call (after a single ring
code sent before the Fax) so the Modem was left on during the day ,a
couple of days during the week,so I could send myself test Faxes from
work. I did get it to work :^)

On the 10th I left it on again only that day was pretty stormy weather.
When I got home I was showing the Mrs. how to send her FootyTips by Fax,
that's when I got the NO DIALTONE message :^(

Now me being a gentle quiet type of bloke I gave the Modem an AUSSIE
(thump {at}#%*&) Ooops now there was a rattle inside. :^o
Not to worry take it back for warranty :^)
Mr Wong (not real name) say "Oh dis wubbish, must take back to supryer
he fix"..{2 weeks later}..Mr Wong said the supplier wont fix because
there is something loose inside, must be physical damage.(mind you they
didn't even open the casing). So I said I'll fix it myself.

So when I opened it up I see a small circuit board floating around
inside.I plugged it in,(Xed fingers) but still NO DIALTONE.(back to
square one) :^( I tried ATX3 blind-dial,this time NO CARRIER.
So now I have to dial the number(telephone) and manually connect (T/D-
 button). :^(((

Now the BIG questions ?? Which chip is responsible for ring detection??
?? Which is responsible for making Tones/Pulse???

 a)ROM?
 b)Rockwell RC144DPi
            R6645-20
 c)Rockwell C2900-11
 d)something else

 The Modem is a Prolink 14400LEW FAX/MODEM

 Anything I missed ?
Any help/suggestions ? (I'd like more info before heating the solder)

 Thanks in advance... :^)

 Leigh.
